Chapter 1
Where it started: Swedish snus
Pouches began in Sweden with snus, a moist tobacco placed under the top lip. For a long time it was sold loose. In the 1970s, Swedish makers started selling it in small portion bags, an idea inspired by tea bags. That was the beginning of the pouch format we know today.
Snus never really became part of UK life. Its sale has been banned across the EU since 1992, with Sweden the exception.
Chapter 2
Nicotine pouches: nicotine without the tobacco
Through the 2000s and 2010s, Swedish companies started removing the tobacco and keeping the format. The result was the white nicotine pouch: plant fibres, flavouring and nicotine, with no tobacco leaf at all. Brands like ZYN followed, and in 2019 nicotine pouches arrived in the UK, quickly becoming one of the fastest-growing products on shop shelves.
People loved the format. It's discreet and smoke-free, and you can use one at your desk, in the gym or on the train. But the active ingredient was still nicotine, which is addictive.

Caffeine and energy pouches
Once people were used to pouches, brands started asking what else could go in them. Caffeine was the obvious next step. Energy pouches offered the same familiar pouch, with a coffee-style hit in place of nicotine.
